Athens opens vaccine clinic as COVID death toll rises

Coronavirus scam reported in Elberton

The Georgia Department of Public Health adds another four deaths to the total in Athens, making 71 coronavirus deaths since March of last year. Deaths attributed to COVID 19 in Oconee County climb from 41 to 42 in the report released Wednesday.

The Northeast Health District says the coronavirus vaccination clinic that opened this week on Oneta Street in Athens is an appointment-only clinic, with the vaccinations going to those 65 and older, and to first responders and health care workers in Athens. The drive-up clinic will also conduct coronavirus testing.

There is another scam alert in Elbert County, this one coronavirus-related: the Police Department in Elberton says callers are claiming to be from the Medical Center in Elberton and are requesting money for what they say are coronavirus vaccination appointments.

Citing spikes in coronavirus case counts, Gwinnett County schools become the latest to pull the plug on in-classroom instruction: schools in Gwinnett County will revert to on-line learning starting next week.
