Winter Storm Watch issued for parts of North Georgia ahead of wintry weather

The prospect for snow and ice on Sunday is still in the forecast for Athens and much of northeast Georgia.

The watch has been issued for: Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Hall, Banks, Jackson and Madison counties. The watch takes effect Saturday evening and lasts through Sunday night.

Some forecast models are calling for sleet, while others say snow and ice accumulations of five inches and higher are possible. The Georgia DOT is making preparations for ice on roadways; the Georgia Power Company and the EMCs are gearing up to restore electricity that might be lost to the anticipated winter storm.

Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns said a winter mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain are all possible this weekend.

Burns said there could be a significant winter mix accumulation of snow and freezing rain from northeast metro Atlanta up to the mountains.

In metro Atlanta and the immediate suburbs, there is the potential for accumulating snow and ice, as well as rain at various times.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Winter weather impacts could be significant
  • Threat for winter weather is higher north of Atlanta
  • Think about your plans and how to prepare!
