Video shows Davis police Cpl. Pheng Ly arrive to an overturned car that was engulfed in flames and the sounds of women screaming. A person at the scene can be heard telling Ly there is still someone inside as he runs to the burning vehicle. He then grabs a woman by the wrists and pulls her to safety.

The car had overturned around 10:32 p.m. along Interstate 80, KTXL reported. Minutes later it was fully in flames.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment. The California Highway Patrol investigated the crash. The female driver was arrested and charged with suspicion of driving under the influence, police said.

“It was just something that I was there to do, and I’m glad I was in the right place at the right time,” Ly told KTXL. “I think it was of a higher calling, for sure.”

Ly, a 21-year veteran of the department, had not mentioned anything to his colleagues about his heroic actions -- a supervisor eventually shared the video with them.

“That’s just the kind of guy that he is. I mean, he does this, he truly has a deep heart and love for it, and I’m not surprised at all,” Davis Police Department Deputy Chief Paul Doroshov told KTXL. “Had she not been out of there within moments, that car’s fully engulfed, I believe she would’ve been deceased.”
