Chip and Joanna Gaines announce return of ‘Fixer Upper’

Celebrity home flippers Chip and Joanna Gaines on Tuesday announced plans to reboot their popular “Fixer Upper” television series beginning in 2021.

"We will be filming another season of Fixer Upper to air on Magnolia Network when it launches next year," Chip Gaines wrote in a post published Tuesday on the website for the couple's Magnolia Network.

From 2013 to 2018, “Fixer Upper” drew millions of viewers to HGTV to watch the couple fix up homes in their hometown of Waco, Texas. The show was the No. 1 rated unscripted series on cable television during its initial run, with 75 million viewers tuning in for its final season, according to Discovery Inc., the parent company of HGTV.

The Gaineses walked away from the show after its fifth season, telling People in 2017 that they felt it was “the right time to catch our breath for a bit.”

"The day we wrapped our final episode of Fixer Upper, we really believed it was a chapter closed," Chip Gaines wrote Tuesday.

“The thing about Fixer Upper was that we got to do the work we love right alongside all of you. Every week, we could feel you cheering on these families from the other side of the screen. And the point is we’ve missed sharing these stories with you.”

Chip Gaines said he and his wife started talking about the possibility of filming new episodes of their home improvement show in recent weeks.

"This past year, we have poured our hearts into content and programming for Magnolia Network," Chip Gaines said. "Searching for stories we believe the world needs to hear. Stories that bring us together, that let us see things in a whole new light. Stories that connect us to our roots, and to one another. And for Jo and me, it dawned on us that we wanted to be a part of this lineup with a new season of Fixer Upper."

Chip Gaines said he and Joanna plan to start filming new episodes of the show soon.

"Jo and I feel like a couple of kids trying our best to keep down a few butterflies," Chip Gaines said. "But we are mostly just giddy about getting the band back together again so we can share the story of these families and their homes with you."

In 2019, the Gaineses announced a partnership between their TV network and Discovery Inc. to bring previous episodes of the show to the Magnolia Network. Other shows slated to launch on the network include an unnamed project featuring self-taught interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn and “Self Employed,” a show that follows entrepreneur Jonathan Morris as he travels the U.S. meeting with inspirational small-business owners.
