Citing a judicial source, Agence France-Presse reported that Depardieu, 72, was formally charged in December after an unnamed actress, then 22, alleged that the “Green Card” actor raped and assaulted her at his Paris home in August 2018.

Depardieu’s lawyer, Hervé Temime, told CNN that Depardieu disputes the allegations.

An initial investigation into the rape allegations was dropped in 2019, with prosecutors citing insufficient evidence, the BBC reported.

In addition to “Green Card,” Depardieu is known for his roles in films like “The Man in the Iron Mask” and “Life of Pi.” He was also nominated for an Oscar in 1991 for his leading role in “Cyrano de Bergerac.”

Depardieu has been nominated for 17 César Awards, and has won twice, Rolling Stone reported. He won for 1981′s “La Dernier Metro” and was victorious again a decade later for “Cyrano de Bergerac.”

He has appeared in 245 films and television shows, People reported.

The woman’s lawyer, Elodie Tuaillon-Hibon, told AFP she hoped her client’s “private sphere” would be respected, the BBC reported.

Away from the cinema, Depardieu attacked French tax laws and moved to Belgium in protest, the network reported.

In 2013, Depardieu was granted Russian citizenship, with his decree signed personally by President Vladimir Putin, CNN reported.
