SOMERSET, Ky. — A nurse who forged a friendship with one of her patients chartered a plane in order to send the dying man to see his son’s first football game of the season.

Scott Sullivan was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in August, CNN reported. Doctors told Sullivan, 50, that he had a few weeks to live and he was transferred to hospice for care.

Sullivan hoped to live long enough to see his son’s first football game of the season.

Sullivan’s nurse, Jerree Humphrey, became friends. They both had sons who played football, albeit at rival schools.

The first game of the season was a nearly 4-hour drive away. Humphrey thought it was too much for Sullivan to be in a car that long. She reached out to a nearby airport and a pilot offered to take Sullivan to the game.

Sullivan boarded the plane Sept. 11. He sat on a hill far from the stands. Cade Sullivan saw his father and ran up the hill.

“Words could not be put into sentences or phrases to describe how I felt at that time,” Sullivan said. “I was just so happy to see my son.”

Humphrey was there.

“You could just not help but cry,” she said. “He just embraced him so hard and was just so thankful for him to be there.”

Scott Sullivan is hopeful to see his son play again Saturday.
