The Associated Press reported that the large male zebra bit its owner’s arm Sunday afternoon. When deputies with the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene in Circleville, Ohio, they said they found the man on the ground in a fenced-in area at a home.

The zebra was acting aggressively and charged the deputy’s cruiser, which was positioned to block the animal from its owner, identified as 72-year-old Ronald Clifton, ABC News reported.

One deputy used the cruiser’s horn and sirens to scare the zebra away from the man but it still charged other first responders.

Eventually, a deputy shot and killed the animal after the zebra approached Clifton’s family. The family gave permission to law enforcement to put the animal down if it got too close, ABC News reported.

Officials said they are not sure what caused the zebra to attack, but that it may be because the male was trying to protect several female zebras in the same field.

Ohio law does not categorize zebras as exotic animals, the AP reported.

Clifton had a bite wound below his right elbow, according to the deputy’s report, ABC News reported.

WSYX reported that Clifton was listed in stable condition and will not lose his arm.
