According to Indiana State Police, Josie M. Huff, 31, of Robinson, Illinois, was arrested on a Level 5 felony charge of theft, the Tribune-Star of Terre Haute reported.

Huff was overseeing the estate for her son, who is also the child of Terre Haute Police Officer Rob Pitts, 45, who was killed in the line of duty on May 4, 2018, the newspaper reported.

Huff was arrested Thursday evening by the Robinson Police Department and taken to the Crawford County Jail, WTWO reported. She will be transported to Sullivan County, where she will be held on $15,000 bail, the television station reported.

Indiana State Police Detective Brian Maudlin opened a criminal investigation on March 6, 2021, according to the Tribune-Star. Maudlin said he received information that Huff had allegedly misused and misappropriated $248,653.81 for self-gain from the estate of her son, the newspaper reported.

Sullivan County Prosecutor Ann Mischler issued a warrant for Huff’s arrest after reviewing the investigation, WTWO reported.

Pitts was a 16-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department, according to the Tribune-Star. Prior to that, he served for six years with the Sullivan City Police Department, according to his obituary.

He was killed after exchanging gunfire with Christopher Wolfe, who was wanted in connection with a homicide in Terre Haute, the newspaper reported.

Wolfe, 21, later died of a gunshot wound he received during the exchange with police, the Tribune-Star reported.

A statue of Pitts will be erected at the new Terre Haute Police Department building when it opens in August, WTHI reported.
