On Feb. 14, McDonald’s will introduce the new burger at approximately 600 restaurants in the San Francisco Bay and Dallas-Fort Worth areas, CNBC reported.

In its announcement, McDonald’s said it began the test in eight restaurants late last year, and is now expanding the trial to better understand customer demand. On its website, McDonald’s describes the McPlant as “a juicy plant-based burger made with a plant-based patty, co-developed with Beyond Meat.” The patty itself is made from peas, rice and potatoes and mimics the taste and texture of beef, CNBC reported.

The eight restaurants that initially sold the McPlant were selling as any as 70 per day, Reuters reported.

Fast food companies have started to offer plant-based items in an attempt to attract more customers, including those who want to eat less meat or add vegetables to their diet for health or environmental reasons, CNN reported.

McDonald’s had previously tested a meatless burger in some Canadian restaurants in 2019. Since that pilot ended, McDonald’s said there were no plans to bring it back, CNBC reported.
