Mayor designates day for Family Promise

Day will coincide with on-line donation campaign

The organization formerly known as the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens will be recognized in an event set for two weeks from today: Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz has designated April 21 as Family Promise Day. The organization says its mission is to prevent and end family homelessness in Athens.

From Family Promise of Athens

Family Promise of Athens, an organization that works to prevent and end family homelessness locally, is recognized by Mayor Kelly Girtz by proclaiming Wednesday, April 21 as Family Promise Day in ACC. Mayor Girtz urges all citizens to recognize and raise awareness of the issue of homeless children and families in our community.

FPA is also partnering with Family Promise National and its network of over 200 Affiliates nationwide to hold a digital awareness event on April 21, 2021.

·         The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the stress that families face with job losses, decreased hours, and virtual schooling.

·         Affordable housing has become scarcer in Athens as both housing prices and rent has increased substantially.

Family Promise Giving Day is a 24-hour online campaign to raise awareness and funds to support families across America experiencing homelessness or at-risk of losing their housing. In addition to providing emergency shelter, Family Promise focuses on preventing families from becoming homeless in the first place.

Family Promise of Athens’ Executive Director Davin Welter is grateful for the many folks who generously give to assist those in need. He says that any gift truly affects the lives of children we serve by decreasing the trauma of homelessness with compassionate shelter.

Those who wish to help us fight family homelessness by participating in Family Promise Giving Day can visit FPGives.org to donate or spread the word on social media.

Folks can also join us to celebrate at Creature Comforts Taproom (271 W. Hancock Ave.) from 4-7 pm for the Family Promise Get Comfortable Community Wednesday on that day (Wednesday, April 21). FPA board and staff will be available to answer any questions about our work.

Folks can also join us at FPA Percentage Night at Brusters Real Ice Cream (1029 Athens W. Parkway) the next day, Thursday, April 22, from 7-10 pm.

Sponsors of this event include ClaytonBelkWoodforest National BankTJXSynchronyKIAProgressiveIkea, and eSalon.
