North Carolina sheriff’s deputies save life of choking 1-month-old baby

TABOR CITY, N.C. — Days after a video of a Michigan police officer saving a choking baby went viral, two North Carolina sheriff's deputies are being praised for their actions during a similar rescue.

According to the Columbus County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Devalle and Sgt. Floyd, whom the department identified only by their last names, were patrolling in Tabor City on Tuesday when two vehicles stopped nearby. Several people then got out of the cars, including someone who was carrying an unresponsive 1-month-old baby, the Sheriff's Office wrote in a Facebook post.

After learning that the baby was choking, Devalle and Floyd sprang into action and "immediately began administering back blows to clear the infant's airway," the department wrote. The child soon began breathing again and was examined at a local hospital, according to the post.

On Wednesday, Devalle and Floyd went to the family's home and visited the baby, who "is doing great," the Sheriff's Office wrote.

“If it wasn’t for Deputy Devalle and Sgt. Floyd’s quick, lifesaving measures, this incident may have been tragically different,” read the post, which also praised the family for seeking help right away.

"Real heroes don't wear capes," the department added. "We are lucky to have these two gentlemen as part of our family."
