Puppy rescued after paws screwed to door frame; South Carolina man arrested

UNION COUNTY, S.C. — A South Carolina man is accused of screwing a puppy’s paws to a door frame with a power drill before barricading the animal inside a bathroom, authorities said.

Tyler Austin Jerdo, 22, of Union County, was arrested and charged with ill-treatment of animals, resisting arrest and escape, WYFF-TV reported.

According to an arrest warrant, Jerdo used a power drill and bored two 4-inch screws through the dog’s paws, attaching them to a door frame, the television station reported. Union County Sheriff’s Office deputies found the animal barricaded inside a bathroom, The State of Columbia reported. Area residents alerted deputies that the dog was inside the home, according to the newspaper.

“He was still alive, but he was weak, wasn’t sure how long he’d been there,” Sheriff Jeff Bailey told WPSA-TV. “Two, four-inch wood screws through his paw.”

The door had several items in front of it, forcing a sheriff to climb through the bathroom window to reach the dog, according to the television station.

“Barbells, the attic steps were pulled down, a birdbath, several things blocking the actual bathroom door,” Bailey told WPSA.

According to an incident report, authorities were able to unscrew the pup from the door frame, WYFF reported.

Jerdo, who arrived at the residence a short time later, allegedly began fighting with deputies who were attempting to arrest him, according to the television station.

The puppy is recovering at the Union County Animal Shelter, where staff members have named him “Asher,” WSPA reported.
